Some words have more than one meaning. Talking about the different meanings of words, whether they sound alike or are spelled the same, helps your child build vocabulary, one of the skills she will need later to understand what she reads.
Activity:
Read Aesop’s fable about the tortoise and the hare or another story containing a word that has multiple meanings – for example, wave, flower/flour, nail, glasses, cap. Before you start the book, talk about the animals. What is a tortoise? It looks like a large turtle. What is a hare? Is it something that grows on your head? This hare is an animal that looks like a rabbit.
