Math Concepts: Shapes

Being able to identify shapes lays the foundation for later math-geometry.  Young children can better understand shapes if they actually handle them.
Try this…
Using blocks or cut out shapes to have children make things.  Encourage them to tell you or the adults with them what they are making.  Then read Mouse Shapes by Ellen Stoll Walsh or another book with shapes.  When you have finished reading, come back to a page and point out one or two objects being made from shapes.  Say, for example, “Look at the house.  What shapes did the mice use to make it?”  Hold up cutouts or blocks of those shapes.
