Physical Development Part 3

An early introduction to the senses  helps children make connections between parts of their bodies, the words that represent them, and the things that they do.  This self-awareness is integral to the development of young children's self-confidence and self-esteem.

Try This...Parents, recite this rhyme while pointing to or gently touching corresponding parts on baby's face.  Older children may enjoy doing this rhyme while pointing to or touching the corresponding parts on their own faces.

Two little eyes to look around (point to eyes)
Two little ears to hear each sound (touch ears)
One little nose to smell what's sweet. (touch nose and take a deep breath)
And one little mough that likes to eat.  (touch mouth)
YUM!  (give child lots of nibble kisses!)

Fall Festival

This is just a reminder that we are having a Fall Festival for kids ages 2 1/2 - 6 Saturday October 29
from 3-4pm.  Kids can come in costume and play games, make crafts and have fun with a caregiver. Registration requred so visit us at the library or call (708) 748-4431 to reserve your child's spot.

Physical Development Part 2

Rhymes and songs that involve sequencing and memory can help children prepare for school.  In the following rhyme, children listen for a certain phrase and then react to it with a large physical movement.  In adition to having fun, they are actually developing their gross motor skills.

Try This...Ask everything to join you in pretending to climb into a box and to shut the lid.  It's very dark inside!  Turn the handle and begin reciting the rhyme.  On the last line, pop up out of the box.

Jack in the box
Sitting so still...
Won't you come out?
Yes, I will!

Physical Development Part 1

Having children act out stories with a variety of movements helps them develop their gross motor skills.

Try This...Read Mushroom in the Rain by Mirra Ginsburg or another book that involves large motions.  Ask children to act out the motions of each animal.
